04Prayer
Let's take a moment to pray together.
Jesus, we thank you that you are compassionate and kind. You gave us life and you are the good shepherd who leads us gently in the paths of righteousness. Change our hearts to be more like you, daily. Help us to love those that you've placed around us, stranger or friend. In your name we pray, amen.

INTRO
Welcome to the Gospel Focused: Family Moment. I'm your host, Eric Novak. Each week, we pause as a family to remember what matters most — the good news of Jesus. This podcast is brought to you by GospelFocused.com
OPENING LITURGY
For our opening liturgy today, I'll be our leader and ask a question, and then you follow along and repeat with your family:
Eric: "Christian family, what do we believe?"
All: "We believe in God the Father, Maker of heaven and earth. We believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. We believe in the Holy Spirit, Who gives us life and makes us one."
SCRIPTURE READING
Our scripture reading today comes from Matthew 9:36:
"And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd."
This is the word of the Lord.
MAIN STORY / REFLECTION
The compassion of Jesus to the people who were following Him is a beautiful thing to see because it's the same way that God feels about us. Because the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one God—three persons, one being (what we call the Trinity or the Triune God)—Jesus always gives us a glimpse into God's priorities.
We know God is holy—that means perfect—and that sin can't last in His presence. That's another way of saying that sin puts distance between us and God, like mud that pulls us away from Him. But we also know that His heart, the center of who He is and how He acts and feels, is oriented towards loving us. So even though we're muddy children, He still wants to pick us up and give us a big hug. God's heart is oriented towards love, towards being together, and part of a big family—in community, together with God. And it always has been.
At the beginning of time, God created a beautiful garden that He wanted to live in with us. It was filled with good things to eat, the most beautiful scenery, and everything was safe. No one ever cried there, because there was no pain and no sadness. God walked with His people in the garden, and sometimes when we are in our best moments, we can almost feel glimpses of the joy that was felt in that friendship with God. Think of your happiest moment...
It was like that. All the time.
When sin entered the world, God already had a plan to fix it. The garden wasn't a failed first attempt that left God scrambling for a backup—God knew all along that Jesus would redeem His people and make a way for us to get right with God. The Gospel is where the ultimate act of compassion took place. God looked on us, helpless, scared, lost, like sheep without a shepherd, and He sent Jesus to die on the cross. Our muddy clothes? Replaced with new robes from Jesus—ones that can't get dirty or stained.
Let's be quiet for a moment.
Think back over your day, not to find what you did wrong, just to notice. Was there someone today who looked sad, or left out, or hurting? Just notice them... that little tug in your heart? That's the very thing Jesus felt when he looked at the crowds.
Pause
Now — where did someone show kindness to you today? A hug, sharing a snack, a helping hand? That kindness was a small echo of how God feels about you all the time.
MEMORY VERSE
Now for our memory verse of the week: "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted…" — Ephesians 4:32
